GoSkinning: An Innovative and Efficient Skinning Tool is a brand-new session happening at GDC Showcase, taking place entirely online this June 27-29. In this session, Tencent Games Senior AI Researcher Zijiao Zeng introduces an innovative automatic skinning production (GoSkinning) which includes a large number of novel deep learning models that may revolutionize the 3D game art pipeline. This workflow will be eight times more efficient than traditional manual skinning.

Compared with state of the art (SOTA) methods as we know them (such as RigNet and NeuoSkinning), higher accuracy and more generalization model (overall skinning) is obtained that can be applied to any complex game character meshes and skeletons, besides, large number of toolsets include learning based models and traditional approaches are developed to solve corner cases and improve skinning accuracy which can't be manipulated by overall skinning model.

"GoSkinning is significant for 3D artists and animators because it streamlines the skinning process, saving time and increasing efficiency (six-times higher efficiency in comparison with manual work). This enables artists to focus more on the creative aspects of their work rather than the technical aspects," Zijiao said.

Zijiao originally planned to present this session at GDC 2023, but unexpected circumstances arose. He shared how he's "excited to have the opportunity" to bring his talk to GDC Showcase, and noted how important it is to have virtual events like this—especially for international game developers.

"I believe virtual events like GDC Showcase are crucial, particularly for audiences in other countries like myself," he said. "Traveling abroad can be inconvenient, expensive, and time-consuming. GDC Showcase provides a platform for networking, learning, and sharing knowledge and ideas within the industry, allowing people from all over the world to participate."

This session is a great place to learn about an invaluable piece of technology that can simply an artist's workload, providing more time and opportunity for creative expression. It's all part of GDC Showcase, an online event happening June 27-29 dedicated to bringing 3 days of great content and networking to the global game dev community.
