Find Out How 'Cyberpunk 2077' Lit Up Night City in This GDC 2022 Session

If Blade Runner taught us anything, it's that the cyberpunk genre looks best at night (ideally in the rain). So how did CD Projekt Red bring light, color, and daytime into Cyberpunk 2077? The answer lies in this GDC 2022 session.

"Cyberpunk 2077: Bringing Light to Night City" is an Advanced Graphics Summit session all about how the lighting techniques used for the open-world game Cyberpunk 2077. Taking place on Monday, March 21 from 2:10 to 3:10pm PT, the talk from art director Jakub Knapik, lighting acting lead Dave Yablonsky, and senior lighting artist Voon Kent Poo explores their vision of creating a living, digital film set—along with some of the unique challenges faced by the team as they tried to bring that dream to fruition.

The talk will dive into two specific production cases (one in an interior, the other in the open world) to highlight the problems inherent to each scenario and how the team chose to tackle them.

"Bringing Light to Night City" will be available for All-Access and Summits pass holders. It's a great opportunity for 3D artists, rendering programmers, developers, and more to get a glimpse into lighting this massive city environment.

Be sure to head to the Game Developers Conference to explore the daylife/nightlife of Cyberpunk 2077. Register for GDC 2022 today!
