The event starts with the 25th annual IGF Awards. Hosted by Marina Díez, the IGF Awards are part of the longest-running festival, summit, and showcase celebrating independent games and their creators. Seumas McNally Grand Prize nominees TUNIC and Betrayal at Club Low are tied for three nominations each. In addition to the grand prize nods, TUNIC is also nominated for Excellence in Audio and Excellence in Visual Arts, and Betrayal at Club Low also has noms for Excellence in Design and the Nuovo Award, which celebrates games that make jurors think differently about games as a medium.
The 22nd annual Game Developers Choice Awards, hosted by Leslee Sullivant, is the leading peer-based video game event celebrating the industry’s top games and developers. FromSoftware's fantasy epic Elden Ring and BlueTwelve Studio's dystopian cat adventure Stray are tied for the lead with six nominations each, followed by Santa Monica Studio's God of War Ragnarök (five nominations) and Obsidian Entertainment's Pentiment (four nominations).
At the GDCA ceremony, Mabel Addis, recognized as the first female game designer, will posthumously receive the Pioneer Award, which honors breakthrough business, tech, and game design milestones. The award-winning game designer, level designer, and programmer John Romero will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for his work on such iconic and genre defining first-person shooters like Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM, and Quake.
